The test taps the hippocampal-dependent episodic memory system. Performance correlates with general vocabulary size, verbal IQ, and educational attainment. Decline in verbal memory is often the earliest detectable sign of Alzheimer's disease.
What does the Verbal Memory test measure?
Verbal Memory tests how large a word buffer you can maintain. You are shown words one at a time and must decide if each is NEW or SEEN. As your word pool grows, the probability of false positives rises. The test ends when you make 3 mistakes. It measures the intersection of episodic memory, semantic memory, and sustained attention.
How to improve your Verbal Memory score
- โ Form a brief image or association for each word as it appears - deep encoding improves recall.
- โ Minimize distractions. Background noise significantly increases false alarm rates.
- โ Take your time before deciding. Rushing leads to more false positives.
- โ High fatigue dramatically hurts this test - best done when mentally fresh.
