The Corsi Block Test was developed by Philip Corsi in 1972. Corsi span averages about 5.9 items in healthy adults - slightly lower than digit span - reflecting the lower capacity of visuospatial compared to phonological working memory in most individuals.
What does the Corsi Block Test test measure?
The Corsi Block Tapping Test presents a spatial sequence of blocks lighting up; you must reproduce the taps in the same order. Unlike digit span, it is non-verbal - it tests visuospatial working memory, mediated primarily by the right hemisphere. It is used to differentiate verbal from spatial memory deficits in neurological evaluations.
How to improve your Corsi Block Test score
- โ Name each block by position ("top-right, center-left") to recruit verbal memory alongside spatial.
- โ Mentally trace the path the sequence forms - an arrow, an arc - rather than individual locations.
- โ Corsi span is typically 1 item shorter than digit span for the same person; don't be discouraged.
