Peripheral vision is mediated by rod photoreceptors and M-pathway (magnocellular) ganglion cells, which are optimized for motion and low-light detection rather than detail. Visual field constriction is a clinical sign of glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and occipital lobe lesions.
What does the Peripheral Vision test measure?
The Peripheral Vision test measures what percentage of targets appearing at varying eccentricities from your central gaze you can detect. The human visual field extends ~100ยฐ horizontally, but acuity drops rapidly beyond 5โ10ยฐ of center. The test challenges your retinal periphery and attentional spread without allowing eye movement.
How to improve your Peripheral Vision score
- โ Fix your gaze firmly at the central fixation point - moving your eyes defeats the test.
- โ Sit at the recommended screen distance (arms-length) - closer reduces eccentricity artificially.
- โ A larger monitor shows genuine peripheral performance; a small screen compresses the visual field.
- โ Peripheral vision is trainable through sport (basketball, soccer, hockey) and wide-field activities.
