Developed by B. A. Eriksen in 1974, the flanker task is a cornerstone of cognitive neuroscience. The flanker effect (incongruent minus congruent RT) is used to study ADHD, aging, meditation effects, and prefrontal cortex function.
What does the Flanker Test test measure?
The Eriksen Flanker Task presents an array of arrows; you must identify the direction of the central arrow while ignoring flankers that may point the same (congruent) or opposite (incongruent) direction. The difference in accuracy and speed between congruent and incongruent trials is the "flanker effect" - a direct measure of selective attention.
How to improve your Flanker Test score
- โ Narrow your visual focus to the exact center arrow - resist the peripheral pull.
- โ Don't respond on reflex; allow 50ms of processing before clicking.
- โ Practice the test daily - flanker performance improves quickly with repetition.
