What is a good Reaction Time score?
| Level | Score Range |
|---|---|
| Exceptional | < 150ms |
| Excellent | 150โ200ms |
| Above Avg | 200โ250ms |
| Average | 250โ300ms |
| Below Avg | 300โ400ms |
| Slow | > 400ms |
Reaction time is a key biomarker in aging research. RT slows approximately 3โ4ms per decade after age 24. It is also used clinically to screen for concussion, Parkinson's disease, and attentional disorders.
What does the Reaction Time test measure?
Reaction time measures the interval between a visual stimulus appearing and your motor response. It reflects the speed of your entire perceptual-motor chain: retinal processing, optic nerve transmission, visual cortex activation, decision-making in the prefrontal cortex, and finally the motor command reaching your finger. The global average is around 273ms for a simple visual stimulus.
How to improve your Reaction Time score
- โ Do 3โ5 warm-up clicks before your scored attempt - cold reactions are 15โ30ms slower.
- โ Sleep 7โ8 hours. A single night of poor sleep slows RT by 30โ50ms on average.
- โ Use a wired mouse and a 144Hz+ monitor to reduce hardware latency.
- โ Stay mentally alert: caffeine (100โ200mg) provides a modest 10โ15ms boost.
