Ayumu's performance in the original 2007 study demonstrated that chimpanzees have a photographic-like eidetic spatial memory superior to humans for brief exposures. This sparked widespread research into trade-offs between language development and photographic memory in human evolution.
What does the Chimp Test test measure?
The Chimp Test is inspired by the famous Primate Research Institute study in which a chimpanzee named Ayumu outperformed humans at memorizing the positions of numbers on a screen. Numbers appear briefly, then are covered - you must tap them in ascending order from memory. It tests visuospatial working memory under time pressure.
How to improve your Chimp Test score
- โ Scan the grid quickly to build a spatial map before the numbers flash.
- โ Group numbers by screen region (top-left cluster, bottom-right) rather than memorizing individual positions.
- โ Don't try to read each number - register its location as a spatial coordinate.
- โ Slow down between clicks at high levels to avoid mis-tapping a covered square.
