Raven's matrices were introduced by John C. Raven in 1936. They are used globally for selection in the military, academia, and corporate settings. SPM (Standard Progressive Matrices) scores correlate 0.74 with full WAIS IQ. Performance improves with practice but reaches a ceiling quickly.
What does the Raven's Matrices test measure?
Raven's Progressive Matrices is the gold standard measure of fluid intelligence (Gf) - abstract reasoning with novel material. Each problem shows a 3ร3 matrix of patterns with one piece missing. You select the correct piece from 6โ8 options. Performance correlates 0.6โ0.8 with full-scale IQ and is remarkably culture-fair.
How to improve your Raven's Matrices score
- โ Identify the transformation rule in rows first, then verify it holds in columns.
- โ Eliminate obviously wrong answers first - the correct answer must satisfy ALL rows and ALL columns.
- โ Don't rush the last 3โ4 items - they are significantly harder and reward careful analysis.
