Anti-saccade errors (reflexive saccades toward the cue) are strongly associated with schizophrenia (error rates up to 50% vs 15% in controls) and ADHD. The task requires the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to override the reflexive saccade pathway from the superior colliculus.
What does the Anti-Saccade Test test measure?
The Anti-Saccade task shows a flashing cue on one side of the screen; you must click on the opposite side. Your automatic oculomotor reflex is to look toward the flash (a pro-saccade), so you must actively suppress this reflex and redirect your gaze. It is one of the most powerful tests of frontal lobe executive control available.
How to improve your Anti-Saccade Test score
- โ Before the flash, mentally prime yourself: "look to the opposite side."
- โ Don't track the flash - treat it as a start signal, not a target.
- โ The anti-saccade task is highly practice-sensitive; daily repetitions reduce error rates significantly.
