Hick's Law (1952) states that RT = a + b ร logโ(n), where n is the number of choices. Each doubling of choices adds ~150ms. Choice RT is used in driving safety research, aviation, and sports science to assess decision speed under uncertainty.
What does the Choice Reaction Time test measure?
Choice Reaction Time requires you to select the correct response from multiple options - unlike simple RT where there is only one response. It demonstrates Hick's Law: RT increases logarithmically with the number of choices. The test measures decision speed and response selection, not just motor speed.
How to improve your Choice Reaction Time score
- โ Before starting, study the stimulus-response mapping until it is automatic.
- โ Keep your fingers resting on the response keys to eliminate movement startup time.
- โ Reduce hand travel - use adjacent keys if possible to minimize the distance between responses.
- โ Your choice RT will always exceed your simple RT by 50โ150ms due to decision overhead - this is normal.
