What is a good Digit Span score?

Digit span is mediated primarily by the phonological loop and is one of the most stable working memory measures across adulthood. WAIS-IV normative data shows a mean forward span of 6–7 and slight decline beginning around age 55.
What does the Digit Span test measure?
Digit Span presents a sequence of digits that you must repeat in order (forward span). The sequence grows by one after each correct recall. It directly tests the phonological loop - your ability to temporarily maintain a verbal sequence using auditory rehearsal. It is a standard subtest of clinical intelligence batteries including the WAIS-IV and WISC-V.
How to improve your Digit Span score
- → Group digits into triplets as they appear: 8-3-7-1-4-9 becomes 837 + 149.
- → Create a rhythm - adding meter to a sequence significantly improves retention.
- → Avoid mouthing the digits aloud; subvocal rehearsal is sufficient and faster.
- → Backward digit span (not tested here) is generally 2 digits shorter and tests additional executive function.
