The phonological loop is one of three components of Baddeley's Working Memory Model. It is disproportionately engaged by language and verbal material. Digit span is a standard subtest in clinical batteries like the WAIS-IV.
What does the Number Memory test measure?
Number Memory (digit span) tests your working memory capacity - specifically the phonological loop, which rehearses and temporarily stores verbal information. George Miller's 1956 paper established that most adults can hold 7ยฑ2 items, known as "The Magical Number Seven." The sequence gets one digit longer after every successful recall.
How to improve your Number Memory score
- โ Chunk digits into groups of 3 (like a phone number). "149276" becomes "149" + "276."
- โ Sub-vocalize (mentally whisper) the sequence to engage the phonological rehearsal loop.
- โ Consistent daily practice of 10 minutes can increase your span by 1โ2 digits within weeks.
- โ Take the test in silence - background speech especially disrupts phonological working memory.
