Shepard & Metzler (1971) discovered the linear RT-angle relationship that established mental rotation as a genuine cognitive process. Spatial ability is strongly linked to STEM achievement. Mental rotation is trainable and shows significant improvement with spatial video game practice.
What does the Mental Rotation test measure?
Mental Rotation tests your ability to mentally rotate 3D objects to determine whether two shapes are the same or mirror images. Performance varies by the angle of rotation - RT increases linearly with angular displacement, suggesting true internal rotation rather than feature-matching. It is one of the largest and most consistent cognitive sex differences found in research.
How to improve your Mental Rotation score
- โ Identify one distinctive feature of the shape, then rotate just that feature to check alignment.
- โ Don't "flip" shapes - check that your mental rotation stays in 3D.
- โ Action video games (especially 3D) measurably improve mental rotation scores within hours of practice.
