The core difference
Verbal memory is the ability to remember that you encountered a specific word or piece of language in a specific context. When the Verbal Memory test shows you the word "harbor" and asks "seen before in this session?", it is testing episodic verbal memory โ the record of specific language events. This system resides primarily in the hippocampus and is domain-general (it works the same way regardless of whether you know what "harbor" means).
Vocabulary (semantic lexical knowledge) is the stored meaning of words in long-term memory โ what "harbor" means, how it is used, what words are related to it. This knowledge lives in the temporal cortex as part of a vast semantic network and is highly stable: once you truly know a word, you know it for decades. It does not involve any memory for when or where you encountered it.
A concrete example
Imagine two people see the word "ephemeral" in the Verbal Memory test:
- Person A (large vocabulary): immediately understands the word's meaning, activates a rich network of associations (brief, fleeting, transient, morning dew, pop music career...). This deep encoding creates a strong memory trace. Likely to recognize it later.
- Person B (smaller vocabulary): sees an unfamiliar word form. Can only encode the visual/phonological pattern of the letters โ a much shallower trace. More likely to miss it on later recognition.
