How the verbal memory test is scored
The Verbal Memory test presents an ever-growing list of words one at a time. Your task is to indicate whether each word appeared previously in the session or is new. Your score is the number of words you correctly process before making a certain number of errors (typically 3 misses or false alarms). Higher scores require maintaining an accurate mental list of seen words over longer and longer intervals — progressively taxing episodic verbal memory and source monitoring capacity.
Because the score reflects both the quality of initial encoding and the accuracy of later recognition judgments, it is a composite measure. This means factors that influence encoding (attention during the viewing window, semantic richness of words seen) and retrieval (sleep, stress, fatigue) both affect the final number. Score data by age group
Unlike visual working memory — which peaks sharply in the early 20s and declines relatively steeply — verbal recognition memory shows a broader, flatter peak extending through the late 20s and early 30s, followed by a more gradual decline. The robust semantic support that language experience provides helps cushion verbal memory against the effects of aging longer than visuospatial systems.

Why verbal memory declines more slowly than visual
The key reason verbal memory is more resilient to aging is that language experience accumulates over a lifetime and provides a rich scaffolding for new word encoding. When a 55-year-old sees the word "library," they activate a dense network of associations built over five decades — which supports more robust encoding and recognition than a 22-year-old with fewer associations. This is called the "semantic scaffolding" effect.
Additionally, the left temporal lobe language areas degrade slightly less rapidly with age than the parietal cortex areas supporting visual-spatial working memory. This anatomical difference contributes directly to the differential decline rates. The reading advantage
Avid readers consistently outperform non-readers of the same age on verbal memory tests, often by 15–25 words. This advantage grows larger with age rather than smaller — readers preserve their verbal memory longer. How to interpret your score
A score of 40–65 words covers the large middle range across most adult age groups and does not indicate any cognitive concern. Scores of 80+ words put you in approximately the top 10% regardless of age. Scores below 25 words in someone under 50 warrant reflection — check whether you were well-rested and focused, as state factors can depress scores significantly.
When to be concerned
A single score, no matter how low, is not a clinical red flag — Human Benchmark is not a medical test. What matters is whether your score is systematically and progressively declining over months in a way that doesn't match your age norms.
