How does ADHD affect working memory?
ADHD is strongly and consistently associated with working memory deficits. People with ADHD typically score 1–2 standard deviations below average on both verbal digit span and visuospatial working memory tasks — one of the most replicated findings in ADHD research.
Working memory deficits in ADHD appear to be partly independent of attention symptoms — meaning they're not just a secondary effect of being distracted. The prefrontal cortex, which manages the central executive component of working memory, shows reduced activation and connectivity in ADHD neuroimaging studies.
Important: A low score on an online digit span test does not diagnose ADHD. Many factors affect a single test score (sleep, distraction, anxiety). ADHD diagnosis requires clinical assessment by a licensed professional.
Stimulant medications (methylphenidate, amphetamine) used in ADHD treatment have been shown to partially improve working memory performance by increasing dopamine availability in the prefrontal cortex. Cognitive training has more limited transfer effects. Take the Number Memory test and Attention test to see your baseline across both domains.
