What is working memory?
Working memory is the cognitive system that temporarily holds and manipulates information for use in ongoing tasks β like mental arithmetic, reading comprehension, and following instructions.
What is the difference between working memory and short-term memory?
Short-term memory passively stores information briefly. Working memory actively manipulates it. Working memory is the more powerful and predictive construct in modern cognitive science.
What is Miller's Magic Number 7?
George Miller's 1956 paper showed humans can hold roughly 7 (Β± 2) items in working memory. It remains one of the most cited papers in psychology and explains why phone numbers are 7 digits long.
Does working memory decline with age?
Yes β working memory capacity peaks in the mid-20s and declines gradually. By age 70 the average digit span is ~5β6 vs ~7β8 in young adults. Exercise and cognitive engagement slow this decline.
How does ADHD affect working memory?
ADHD is strongly associated with working memory deficits. People with ADHD typically score 1β2 standard deviations below average on digit span and spatial working memory tasks.
What is chunking and why does it improve memory?
Chunking groups individual items into meaningful units β turning "1,4,9,2" into "1492" (Columbus). It effectively bypasses the 7-item limit by reducing the number of chunks, not the information.
How does sleep affect working memory?
A single night of poor sleep reduces working memory performance by 20β40%. Sleep is when the hippocampus consolidates short-term memories into long-term storage β skipping it causes memory deficits.
Is working memory related to IQ?
Working memory and fluid IQ correlate strongly (r β 0.5β0.6). It predicts academic performance, reading comprehension, and problem-solving ability better than many other cognitive measures.
Can brain training apps actually improve working memory?
Some targeted training (dual n-back, direct digit span practice) produces real but narrow gains. Most commercial brain-training apps show limited transfer to real-world tasks. Aerobic exercise and sleep have broader effects.
What is the phonological loop in working memory?
The phonological loop is a subsystem of working memory that stores verbal and acoustic information through subvocal rehearsal β silently repeating sounds. It is the main system loaded by digit span tests.
Why Working Memory Matters
Working memory is the cognitive workspace where thinking happens. It holds information in mind while you use it β following directions, doing mental arithmetic, reading a sentence and remembering its start by the time you reach its end.
This FAQ covers the most common questions: from the basics of what working memory is to clinical questions about ADHD and aging, to practical techniques for improving your capacity.
