How is WPM (words per minute) calculated?

WPM (words per minute) is calculated using a standardised formula where one "word" equals 5 characters — regardless of actual word length. This prevents long words from being penalised and short words from being rewarded.

Gross WPM = (Total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed
Net WPM = Gross WPM − uncorrected errors
Example: 300 characters typed in 1 minute with 2 errors
Gross = (300 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 60 WPM   Net = 60 − 2 = 58 WPM

The 5-character standard was established by typewriter manufacturers in the early 20th century and has been used universally ever since. It means typing "I am a cat" (10 characters including spaces) counts as 2 words, while "internationalisation" (20 characters) counts as 4 words.

Spaces count as characters in the standard formula. The Typing Speed test uses the standard 5-character definition so your score is directly comparable to any other WPM test.
