Why is reaction time important in sports and driving?

Reaction time has direct, measurable consequences in driving, sport, and workplace safety โ€” and is one of the strongest single predictors of general cognitive health.

Driving safety

At 100 km/h, a vehicle travels ~28 metres per second. A 100ms improvement in RT reduces stopping distance by nearly 3 metres โ€” the difference between a near-miss and a collision. Alcohol at 0.08% BAC adds ~30ms of RT; sleep deprivation adds ~50ms.

Sports performance

Reaction time determines first touch in tennis, off-the-line speed in sprinting, first contact in boxing, and shot-timing in racket sports. Elite athletes invest heavily in RT training.

Cognitive health marker

Longitudinal studies show that slowing RT over years precedes memory complaints and cognitive decline diagnoses by 5โ€“10 years. It is one of the earliest detectable signals of neurological aging.

Workplace safety

Occupations involving machinery, aircraft, or emergency response use RT assessments to screen for impairment from fatigue, medication, or medical conditions.
