Strategy 1: Shape chunking (start here)

When the grid lights up, immediately scan for geometric shapes formed by adjacent highlighted squares: L-shapes, T-shapes, rows, columns, corners, diagonals. Mentally label each group with a single shape name โ€” "L-top-left, column-right, isolated-bottom." During recall, reconstruct from these shape labels rather than individual square positions.

This works because visual working memory stores objects, not coordinates. Three squares forming an L-shape can be stored as one object โ€” freeing two working memory slots for other squares.

Strategy 2: Zone-and-count method

High impact

Divide the grid into four quadrants (top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right). During the display, rapidly count how many squares are highlighted in each zone and note their rough arrangement. During recall, fill in each zone independently. This prevents the catastrophic interference that happens when isolated squares in different areas of the grid compete for the same memory slot.

Pair this with verbal counting: "two in TL forming a column, zero in TR, three in BL making an L, one isolated in BR." The verbal trace provides a backup retrieval route if the visual trace fades.

Strategy 3: Anchor to a reference point

Identify one distinctive highlighted square (e.g., the topmost, or the one in a corner, or a lone isolated square) and anchor your recall from it. Describe other squares in relation to this anchor: "two right of the top-left corner square, one below it." Relational encoding is far more robust than absolute position encoding, because relationships remain stable even if your memory of the absolute grid position drifts slightly.

Strategy 4: Sequential tracing / path method

Moderate impact

For higher levels (7+) where chunking alone may not suffice, try mentally tracing a path through all highlighted squares in a systematic order (e.g., top to bottom, left to right within each row). Convert the path into a quick narrative or directional sequence: "top-left corner, skip one, top-right edge, drop two, center-left cluster." This engages procedural memory alongside working memory and can push performance to Level 8+.

Strategy 5: Exploit the empty spaces

Useful for higher levels

At higher levels, remembering which squares are not highlighted can sometimes be easier than tracking those that are โ€” especially when the highlighted squares are widely scattered. Instead of tracking 10 highlighted squares, you track 6 empty ones in a grid of 16. This cognitive inversion is counterintuitive but effective when the majority of the grid is lit up at very high levels.

A 4-week practice plan

Following this structure over 4 weeks will systematically build your score while avoiding the diminishing returns of mindless repetition.

Week 1: Strategy acquisition

Take the test 3ร— daily. After each run, write down which strategy you used on each level and whether it worked. Focus exclusively on shape chunking (Strategy 1). Don't worry about score โ€” focus on strategy execution.

Week 2: Strategy combination

Add zone-and-count (Strategy 2) for levels where chunking alone leaves isolated squares. Practice switching between strategies based on the pattern โ€” some patterns suit one approach better than another.

Week 3: Supplementary training

Add complementary tasks: Sequence Memory (spatial order), Kim's Game (object-location memory), and one 30-min aerobic exercise session. Begin applying anchor (Strategy 3) to higher levels.

Week 4: Best-attempt conditions
