What is the MoCA test?

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a 30-point neuropsychological screening tool designed to detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI). It was developed by Dr. Ziad Nasreddine in 1996 and is now used in over 100 countries.

The MoCA covers eight cognitive domains in approximately 10 minutes:

Visuospatial / Executive
Trail making, clock drawing, cube copy
Naming
Identifying pictured animals
Memory
5-word delayed recall
Attention
Forward digit span, tapping, serial 7s
Language
Sentence repetition, word fluency
Abstraction
Identifying similarities between objects
Delayed Recall
5-word recall after interference
Orientation
Date, month, year, place, city

A score of 26/30 or higher is considered normal. Scores of 18–25 indicate mild cognitive impairment; below 18 suggests moderate to severe impairment. The test became publicly known when President Donald Trump reportedly scored 30/30 at Walter Reed in January 2018.
